Last night I went to my brother's intramural championship softball game. I had been planning on going to a good friend's bridal shower (she's moving to Ohio where her fiance is going to dental school so they can finish wedding prep stuff while living in the same state, so I really wanted to go and see her before she goes, but when I heard about the championship game... well... I had to go. I called Mindy while on my way home from the game to tell her why I missed it and, as I knew she would be, she was glad I got to go to his game and really glad that he won! - don't worry, that didn't ruin my story. and, we'll hopefully get together sometime next week), but decided it was more important that I support my brother and watch his team kick the trash out of Riley Nelson's team (he's a punk, by the way. instead of joining his team when lining up to slap five with the other team and say 'good game' he walked off and started changing his shoes. harper - having had more interaction with him before that - had already told me he was a real punk, and I saw that as evidence of it. it's too bad. i hate it when athletes - and anyone else - are really good and full of themselves.). And that's exactly what happened (again, not ruining the story).
They had to beat this team twice since they had had a bad game earlier in the tournament and lost to them.
No problem.
The first game wasn't even close.
The second game was even less close.
They had to call the second game at the end of the... 6th inning (? - I think), because Harper's team was 10 runs ahead, and the mercy rule applied.
It was awesome.
I think it may have been my first time witnessing an intramural championship where the team that I was rooting for won. (unless I was at my bro-in-law's ultimate frisbee championship and they won... which could have been the case... but I don't remember. it was a long time ago.)
Now to the point of my story -
While sitting on the grass on the sidelines during the first inning of the first game, I watched a batter on my brother's team hit a popfly. I looked up and saw the ball heading straight to my head (after going up a long way in the air it started coming down a long way to the ground). I leaned my head down and away so it wasn't the target anymore, but didn't correctly estimate where it was going to land because it ended up nailing me right on my hip (I was kind of lying on my side). And - OUCH. It hurt. A ton. It stung, and hurt. But I was fine.
After batting, Clay (Harper's friend and teammate) came over and asked if I was okay, saying he was sorry, and that's when I realized who was responsible... Later, Caitlin mentioned it to Harper, who immediately turned to Clay and yelled, 'You hit my sister?' Nice. (:
Today's, it's bruised, and showing some burst blood vessels.
It's ugg-ly.
I'm just glad it's hidden by my clothes.
I will say it's kind of fun to have a (non-permanent) mark of the championship game. Maybe 'fun' is the wrong word.
Anyway, so glad I could be there to watch, and so glad they won!

The Season Comes to a Close

Since the first Wednesday in January, I've been playing volleyball in a local gym league. We haven't played straight through until now (we had a couple weeks off in between the seasons, and then another couple weeks off before out tournament game last night because of spring break and a major church meeting), but on and off, I've gotten a lot of volleyball-playing in.
I've loved it.
Ever since 8th grade I've really enjoyed playing volleyball, and I'll accept almost any opportunity I have to play.
After playing in an institute tournament - in which my ward won the championship (the same day I got dumped because I like dogs - it was a day of extreme emotions...) - some girls in my ward decided they wanted to play in this gym league and invited me to play with them. I'm so glad I said yes
In this league, these last two seasons, I can probably count on one hand the number of games my team has won (and we played 2, sometimes 3 games a week), but we had fun. We had a lot of fun.
In the first season, our team name was 'Victorious Secret.' This season - 'Some Spike it Hot.' We had shirts with our team name made for both. We may not have been the most talented, but our 'uniforms' looked the coolest. (:
During this season I had cheering support from three of my oldest sister's children for one game while they were visiting from Denver, and my younger sister (while visiting from Oklahoma) along with my visiting teaching companion for another game (my younger sister and visiting teaching companion are now sisters-in-law). It was a lot of fun to have them there watching. And we actually won the game that my sister and friend made it to. Which of course was more fun for them to watch. I'm guessing. (:
So, with some sadness, I'll say goodbye to volleyball and look forward to any other chances to play.

The Legend
Last week Wednesday I was able to use one of my parents' basketball tickets and watch BYU play CSU - or, in other words, I got to see 'The Jimmer' live. It was awesome. BYU has had such a great team this year.

It was so fun to be there. I'm so glad I was able to go. The reffing was pretty terrible that game (the ref's weren't seeing any fouls from CSU... well, maybe a few), but we still pulled out with a win. Which is always nice. My dad's comment on the reffing - 'This is Obama-reffing. It doesn't matter how good you are, or how hard you've worked, we're going to make you all equal.' I must say I agreed with the statement.
BYU playes SDSU on Saturday, and if you missed the game, that's really too bad. It was a great game, and showed how many awesome players BYU has this year - it's not just Jimmer... (:
update: Oh, and apparently I was on the jumbo-tron in the arena. I totally missed it, but during the 2nd half I got a text from my friend Jane saying that if I was at the game, I was on the jumbo-tron. Jane, thanks for letting me know in the first place, and thanks for the reminder in your comment!
before the game my dad and I saw LaVell Edwards (BYU's legendary football coach - renamed the football stadium for him when he retired), and then Elder Bednar came and joined them.
i wonder what it would be like to see such a large version of my face...

more pink shoes...
